FAQ's

Q: What is Aikijutsu?

A: Historically, Aikijutsu was one the major unarmed martial arts of the Samurai. It is an advanced form of Jujutsu and is over 800 years old. Aikijutsu is the father of modern Aikido.

Q: What is the difference between the "do" and "jutsu" at the end of the name of a Japanese martial art?

A: Originally all Japanese martial arts used the "jutsu" (art) suffix as in Aikijutsu, Jujutsu, Kenjutsu, Iaijutsu, etc. This indicated that it was a  martial art and was derived from the battlefield, contained killing techniques, and was used for self defense.Through the modernization of these arts into sports, The "jutsu" was replaced with the the "do" (way). For example, from Aikijutsu came Aikido, Jujutsu - Judo, Kenjutsu - Kendo, Iaijutsu - Iaido, etc. The "do' (way) signified less emphasis on self defense and more on training in a "sporting" fashion.

Q: How is your dojo different from other martial art dojo or schools?

A: The dojo etiquette and atmosphere is of the traditional nature in its design. We consider the dojo to be a sacred place were men and women hone their skills and perfect their character through hard training. The focus is on practical self defense. We believe that we are one of just a few dojo left that still train in such a manner.Training in our system is a serious commitment and not for everyone. Many people today treat martial arts as a pastime, or hobby and the dojo like a club. We do not. Our training is designed for those who will actually have to use it in real life.

Q: How long to reach Black Belt in your system?

A: The more appropriate question should be "How long does it take to become proficient in self defense in your system?" The answer to that lies solely on the individual student. Our system, as with all martial arts, requires the student to learn specific numbers of principles and techniques. Becoming "proficient" with these principles and techniques in actual fighting situations is a different story altogether. This is what separates those who just learn techniques like dance moves and those who can actually apply them in dangerous life threatening situations. So in short if you train hard and come to every class, it all depends on you and how much you put into it.

Q: What is the training like?

A:  Contact and striking distance between students is first and foremost the most important part of our training. Contact can range from soft to hard as skill advances but it still must be made at all times. Striking distance has to be realistic. The students must strike through their targets, not stopping inches away. This can create a dangerous false confidence.
